Lasitaiteilija Anna-Kaisa Kukkonen-Madin uniikeista lasiveistoksista koostuva A L T T A R I T Altars -teoskokonaisuus puhuu pyhän kokemisesta luonnossa.

Luonto itsessään on täydellinen ja pyhä. Pyhän edessä olemme itseä suuremman edessä ja se asettaa ihmisen mittakaavaan. Minkä alttarille ja miten kauan olemme valmiita uhraamaan luontoa, Kukkonen-Madi kysyy.

Näyttely koostuu alttareista, joilla vedestä ja puista inspiraationsa saaneet pelkistyneet lasiveistokset lepäävät valkoisessa valossa. Suomalainen sielunmaisema elää suurta muutosta ja taiteilijalle on tärkeää tallentaa sitä, mikä kerran oli olemassa. Pohjois-Karjalassa Heinävedellä vesistöjen ja metsien keskellä asuvan ja työskentelevän Kukkonen-Madin teokset pohjautuvat muistikuviin, jotka ovat syntyneet hänen omista luontokokemuksistaan. Ne puhuvat yhä harvinaistuvan koskemattoman luonnon ja erityisesti puhtaiden luonnonvesien, järvien, lampien ja lähteiden puolesta.

Lasiveistoksissaan Kukkonen-Madi antaa lasin käyttäytyä sille ominaisella tavalla. Toteutuakseen taiteilijan teokset vaativat lasinpuhaltajan ja hiojan taiturimaista työskentelyä. Käsin puhalletuissa teoksissa korostuvat lasin materiaaliset ominaisuudet kolmiulotteisuus, läpinäkyvyys ja optiikka, joita leikkaukset ja hionta korostavat.

Tavoitteenani on löytää ilmiön sielu ja siirtää se lasiin, Kukkonen-Madi sanoo.

Teokset on puhaltanut ja hionut Mafka&Alakoski, Lasismi ja Juha Juselius Riihimäellä. Kukkonen-Madin lasiveistoksia on ollut esillä muun muassa Suomen Lasimuseossa, Venetsian lasiviikkojen päänäyttelyssä Italiassa ja Art Basel Miami taideviikoilla USA:ssa.

The unique glass sculptures of glass artist Anna-Kaisa Kukkonen-Madi’s A L T T A R I T Altars installation speak of experiencing the sacred in nature.

Nature itself is perfect and sacred. In front of the sacred, we are in front of something greater than ourselves and it puts us on a scale. To what altar and for how long are we willing to sacrifice nature, Kukkonen-Madi asks.

The exhibition consists of altars where glass sculptures inspired by water and trees rest in white light. The Finnish landscape is undergoing great change and it is important for the artist to save in glass views that once existed. Kukkonen-Madi, who lives and works in the middle of lakes and forests in Heinävesi, North Karelia, draws on memories that have emerged from her own experiences with nature. They speak for the increasingly rare untouched nature and especially for clean natural waters, lakes, ponds and springs.

In her glass sculptures, Kukkonen-Madi lets glass behave in its own unique way. To be realized,
the artist’s works require the masterful work of a glassblower and grinder. The hand-blown works emphasize the material properties of glass: three dimensionality, transparency and optics, which are emphasized by cuts and grinding.

My goal is to find the soul of the phenomenon and transfer it to glass and glass is the mysterious interpreter of my stories, Kukkonen-Madi says.

The works were blown and ground by Mafka&Alakoski, Lasismi and Juha Juselius in Riihimäki. Kukkonen-Mad’s glass sculptures have been exhibited, among others, at the Finnish Glass Museum, the main exhibition of the Venice Glass Weeks in Italy, and Art Basel Miami in the USA.

Artist statement

Anna-Kaisa Kukkonen-Madi is a Finnish glass artist who wants to let glass behave in its characteristic way. ´I don´t want to disturb the original character of glass´, she says. In the process of designing a glass sculpture she thinks how glass would show it´s beauty, three dimensionality, transparency and organic nature best. Anna-Kaisa works with her professional team of artisans in Riihimäki. She aims at reduced form with emotion, strength and sensitivity. ´I try to find the soul of a phenomen and save it in glass.

Anna-Kaisa is inspired by nature. Her minimalistic artworks are both sensitive and powerful. The pure form of her glass sculptures reflects the sincerity of northern nature where a human is not an observer but a part of nature´s endless cycle. Anna-Kaisa’s art speaks for pure nature and especially for pure water. Her installation S A A R E T Islands is a fragile but strong message for unspoiled water. She exhibits her glass sculptures in white light like the rarest jewelry to underline the thought that pure nature is the only luxury we have and there´s not much left of it.

Anna-Kaisa is especially interested in memory traces which originate in people´s environment. ´The sound, scent and visual appearance of our environment shape our lives. Our experience of environment is changing rapidly. My items are like reminders or notes of what there once has been´, she says. The artist lives and works in Eastern Finland surrounded by lakes and woods. ´For me nature is the joy and the shelter´, she says.
