Peter Strebel on tutkinut jo vuosia Italian kulttuuria, historiaa ja perinteitä. Erityisesti hän on keskittynyt Basilicatan maakuntaan eteläisessä Italiassa. Basilicatan seutu on herkkää maanjäristysaluetta. Ympäri maakuntaa löytyy lukuisia maanjäristyksissä vaurioituneita ja autioituneita kyliä. Alianello on yksi niistä.

Strebelin ystävä halusi näyttää miltä hänen kotikylänsä Alianello näyttää maanjäristyksen jälkeen. Kokemus meni ihon alle. Vuoden 1980 maanjäristys oli jättänyt voimakkaat jäljet, murtuneet talot olivat täynnä merkkejä elämästä joka katkesi 23.11.1980 klo 19.35. Ystäväperheen kodin lattialla oli vieläkin isän työkenkä, jossain oli jäänyt korttipeli kesken ja kotitekoiset oliiviöljysäilykkeet löytyi monesta keittiön kaapista. Autioitunut kylä odotti että joku tulisi kohta jatkamaan elämäänsä.

Kuvat on otettu v. 2015 ja 2021/22. Vuonna 2015 (kuvat 42-49) Strebel kuvasi dokumentin autioituneen kylän tilanteesta. Niistä kuvista hänellä oli seuraavana vuonna Alianossa yli 60 kuvan näyttely. Alianon kunta osti kaikki kuvat ja muutti näyttelytilan kylän museoksi.

2021/22 (kuvat 1-41) Strebel sai uuden inspiraation, hän halusi valmistaa valokuvia joissa olisi vanhan ajan henkeä. Camera obscuran tapaiset kuvat on kuvattu erikoisella objektiivilla ja käsitelty sekä muokattu tietokoneella. Tavoite oli saada nykytekniikalla samaa tunnelmaa mitä yli 150 vuotta vanhan neulanreikäkameran karheissa kuvissa on ollut.

”Aina kun käyn Alianellossa koen astuvani keskelle historiaa, menneeseen aikaan. Kuvatessani siellä yhdistän mielelläni nykytekniikkaa ja vanhoja kuvaustapoja. Kun kävelen Alianellon kujia ja tutkin sen taloja ja yksityiskohtia, mietin ketkä ovat asuneet siellä, miten he ovat eläneet, syntyneet ja kuolleet? Minkälainen yhteishenki on ollut kylässä, kuinka tiiviisti asutun kylän asukkaat ovat liittyneet arjen askareissa yhteen? Kirkko, koulu, kaupat ja viljelykset Val d’Agrissa ovat olleet elämän keskiössä. Luonto ja sen neljä vuodenaikaa ovat määrittäneet ihmisten toimintaa. Hiljaisina kausina harrastettiin käsitöitä, kirjoittamista, kerrottiin tarinoita, pelattiin korttia, ja musisoitiin. Syrjäisen sijaintinsa takia Alianellon asukkaiden kieli on kehittynyt vuosisatojen aikana ainutlaatuiseksi murteeksi. Liikkuessani Alianellossa mietin näitä asioita ja alan mielikuvituksen voimalla nähdä edessäni elävän kylän. Talot ja kujat heräävät henkiin.”

Alianello hiljeni 23.11.1980 klo 19.35 maanjäristyksen seurauksena.

Alianello’s Eternal Sleep – the abandoned village

Peter Strebel has been studying Italian culture, history and traditions for years. In particular, he has focused on the province of Basilicata in southern Italy. The Basilicata region is a sensitive earthquake area. There are numerous villages around the province that have been damaged and deserted by earthquakes. Alianello is one of them.

Strebel’s friend wanted to show what his home village of Alianello looks like after the earthquake. The experience went under the skin. The 1980 earthquake had left strong traces, the broken houses were full of signs of life that ended on 23.11.1980 at 19.35. On the floor of the friend’s family home there was still a father’s work shoe, somewhere a card game had been left unfinished, and homemade olive oil preserves were found in many kitchen cabinets. The deserted village was waiting for someone to come soon to continue their life.

The photos were taken in 2015 and 2021/22. In 2015 (photos 42-49), Strebel filmed a documentary about the situation in the deserted village. The following year, he had an exhibition of more than 60 pictures in Aliano. The municipality of Aliano bought all the pictures and turned the exhibition space into a village museum.

2021/22 (photos 1-41) Strebel got a new inspiration, he wanted to make photos with the spirit of the old days. Camera obscura-like images are taken with a special lens and processed/edited on a computer. The goal was to get the same atmosphere with modern technology as the rough pictures of a pinhole camera that is over 150 years old.

Every time I visit Alianello, I feel like I’m stepping into the middle of history, into the past. And when I photograph there, I like to combine modern technology with old ways of photographing.

”As I walk through the alleys of Alianello and explore its houses and details, I wonder who has lived there, how they have lived, been born and died? What kind of community spirit has there been in the village, how closely have the inhabitants of the densely populated village joined together in everyday chores? The church, school, shops and farms in Val d’Agris have been at the heart of life. Nature and its four seasons have defined human activity. During the quiet seasons, people engaged in crafts, writing, storytelling, card playing, and music. Due to its remote location, the language of the inhabitants of Alianello has evolved over the centuries into a unique dialect. As I move around Alianello, I think about these things and, with the power of imagination, I begin to see a living village in front of me. Houses and alleys come to life.”

Alianello fell silent on 23.11.1980 at 19.35 as a result of an earthquake.
